Conservative Parents

When we have children we have "ideas" on how we want them to be.  It is human nature.  I have a goal for my daughter, most importantly I want her to have faith in Jesus Christ, I want her to be grateful, hard working, loving and respectful.

We get on to them when they make mistakes, not only to teach them right from wrong, but to give them a taste of the real world.  In the real world if you make mistakes there are consequences.  As to at home.  Well it should be.

A huge part of what parents do, should be to prepare the child for adult hood.  If you give your child all that they "want" how are they going to adjust to being on their own.  In real life they will not get all they want and will be unprepared to deal with that fact.  If you do not give your children a taste of consequences they will not know how to react when they receive them in adult hood.  I have seen grown adults shut down emotionally, quit a job, all because they were held accountable for their actions.

If a child is having a bad day should we make them keep up with their chores?  I think for the most part if they are not dying then yes.  Every once in a while they should be given a break if they are sick but a bad day?  NO.  Children that are allowed to give excuses will continue to use them and in the real world they will constantly have problems.  Bosses do not like excuses, excuses will not pay bills.

Spoiled, coddled children will grow up to have feelings that the world is out to get them, they will have trouble with work relationships, personal relationships and authority figures.  Authority figures will be dismissed as bossy and mean, which will hinder their work success.

I believe the first lesson in the Bible is to work hard.  He worked so hard that even God Almighty took a day off.  I am sometimes confronted with this, I don't think any of us are working so hard that we need daily breaks from the real world.  People have called me a hard worker.  I usually fell I could do more.

Having fun with kids is the easy part, I love making my daughter laugh.  But that isn't all there is to parenting.  The hard part is teaching them ethics, hard work and responsibility.

You will not win many popularity contest with this ideal, but your kids will respect you in the long run.

Conservative

Conservative should be a movement not a political ideology.  I have written about this before but I truly believe that Conservatives should learn to conserve, at home, at work and in the Government.  We yell and scream at Washington spending money frivolously and at home we have two car payments, numerous credit cards, we buy new furniture ( on credit ) have to have toys for the kids waste food, eat out several times a week and expect our Government to spend wisely.  I think we expect the Government to do what we will not.  That is the problem, we always say Government is for the people by the people, well that is what we got.  They are acting just like us.  If we start at living conservatively at home, maybe the Government will follow.

Just a rant.

Roughnecks and Gas Prices

I for one am really enjoying the recent drop in gas prices.  However not everyone is.  I have

several friends that are employed by the Texas oil industry and they are really vocal about

how the low prices suck for their industry.

I am in the construction industry and it has ups and downs too.  2008 for example, and not

just the construction field, retail, restaurants, all took a huge hit.  I got laid off, and you didn't

hear me cry boo hoo.  Nope I just started looking for a J.O.B.

Historically the oil industry pays more than other industries.  By more, I mean it pays a

ridiculous amount more.  Starting out about with no experience and no college degree,

$100,000 a year, and that is low for the oil field.  I hear about people making $15k - $20k, a

month!  Starting out in the construction field with a college degree and you are lucky to

make a quarter of that.

People getting laid off is no joke and I feel for them.  However when I see them making

comments like "Hope y'all enjoy the low gas prices. Sad day for guys that bust

their rear ends to provide for their families".  I can't help but think how much money

these guys did make when they were employed.  I can't help but think that that industry has

been up and down for almost a hundred years and you didn't think to put back a few

dollars?  I see all those jet ski's, Harley's and boob jobs you bought and posted on

Facebook.   HEY you aren't the only people that works hard and bust their rear ends for

your family.

I guess non oil field people are now getting a much needed break in gas prices, so I guess

it kind of evens out.  So suck it up, look for a J.O.B and save your money.

2014 Movie Thoughts

Top movie at the box office was Guardians of the Galaxy, Meh.  Great for kids and lots of action with a few Easter eggs to tie in with the Avengers, which I really liked.

Hunger Games, Meh

Captain America the winter soldier, good

The Lego Movie, didn't see it.

Transformers; Age of Extinction, Meh, ok.

Maleficent, nope

Interstellar, great movie.  Kids will not like it, but if you have ever thought about black holes and time travel you will find it interesting.

Hobbit comes out today, I am sure it will be good but I am still mad that they made that story three movies.

Surprise movies that were nowhere on any good list.

The Signal  about some MIT students and amature hackers that get blamed for a hack that they did not do.  They try to track mystery hacker down and when they do it goes crazy.  Great trick ending.  Definitely for the sci fi fan.  Good for people that like good low budget thinking movies.

There is another "The Signal" movie out there that got great reviews for a low budget film that I have not seen.  Neat idea though.  HERE.

Older but still great low budget sci fi films.

Cube

A Sound Of Thunder Time travel based on the butterfly effect.

The move Primer and MOON make all these list but I have only seen MOON, good movie but not at the top of my list.  Great trick ending though.

Year end TV Review

Homeland fell flat for the season finale.  Very little resolution and seems like it should have been one more episode.  Most disappointed I have been with that show.  Still great.

NCIS, why do I even watch that show.  Highest rated show on tv and it isn't that great.

The 100, on the WB, I know, I know, but a friend told me about it and it is good with a decent sci fi premise.  Should be on SYFY but they only show ghost reality shows now.  Worth a watch if you like sci fi.

The Blacklist was is the best show on network tv by far.  Good characters plus the great James Spader.

A close second was Hannibal.  Gory to a fault but it really needs to be to tell that story.

Elementary is worth a watch, neat take on modernizing Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock is great on the BBC.  Starring the weird Benedict Cumberbatch, who oddly enough is a great actor.  Watson is played by young Bilbo Baggins fame Martin Freeman.  Both have gained a lot of notoriety since Sherlock started and both want to continue to do this show, great for me.

Watched Luther on BBC a long time ago, good British cop show.

I stayed with Sons of Anarchy, why I do not know, but I did and it is over.  Good.

Speaking of FX tv, The Strain was great.  A new look at the whole vampire story.  I will watch next season.

The Americans, looking forward to it.  80's Russian spy show, watch it.

Justified, looking forward to it.  Also the last season but it will be missed.

Started watching Vikings, I am hooked.  I wonder how historically accurate that is.

Speaking of the SYFY channel, they seem to want to fail.  The greatest show they ever did was Battlestar Galactica.  Which I loved, call me a nerd but watch it and then call me a nerd.  It seems after they had legitimate success with BSG they decided to go a different direction with all the reality shows about ghost and costume design.  Shortly after BSG they did Stargate Universe which was a loose spin off to the 10 year tv series SG1 whch was a spin off of the move Stargate staring Kurt Russel.  SGU was great but they put it in a terrible time slot and it failed.  Partly because of the severe nerds that wanted to stay true to the SGU series starring MacGyver.  Oh well I think they have learned their lesson that they need at least one space opera to satisfy the masses.

Speaking of, they just did a mini series called Ascension, which oddly enough is how BSG started.  The show was good, but they did not seem to give it 100%, just fell flat in certain places.  Watch it and let me know.  Could lead to a series with some potential.  Ascension also starred the hopelessly unattractive Tricia Helfer, which should not hurt its chances.

Also SYFY is trying to make a series of the movie Twelve Monkeys, it will be called 12 Monkeys, see what they did there?

Longmire may be cancelled but it was a good modern day western.

True Detective was great, really graphic, but good.

Rectify is slow and uneventful but I could not stop watching.

And of course The Walking Dead, greatness.

Well Eugene was full of crap.  I kept waiting for one of the group to say "yeah we knew"  but they all seemed surprised when he let it out that he was not a scientist.  Come on, of course he isn't, that mullet was too cool to be used on a scientist.

I hope they elaborate on Ford's past.

Not a big fan of having dedicated episodes to each faction, I guess that is why I think the last two episodes were a little slow.

I am looking to make extra money, so a friend told me about Thumbtack neat site that lets you post needed services online and the contractors will bid/submit quotes for the work.  So I thought that it would be good for me to get on there and submit some quotes.  So the first day I signed up, posted some pics of previous jobs that I have completed, set my desired projects that I would like to submit prices for, and waited.  They started really flying in, I found one I liked and submitted a price.  I got my price in about 3 minutes after it was posted and I was the 10th submission.  There is some real competition on this site.  Looks like Thumbtack is better for the home owner than contractors.
